Play with who you start with.....

I just read where the Dodgers just reacquired Greg Maddox from the Padres. I don't care at all about the Dodgers or the Padres but I see this as a symptom of what is wrong with baseball. I think once you leave Spring Training, you should have to play the season with the players you have on your roster or fill you roster from your minor leagues. I don't think that at this time in the season, you should be able to go out and build your team. I also don't think it is fair to the fans for you to be "dumping" your players midseason.

If you've read my blog at all, you'll know I am a Braves fan. I love baseball and I live near Atlanta so following the Braves was kind of a no brainer. I bought tickets for our family to go to a game on September 6th. I did this awhile back. As you probably know, the Braves stink this season. However, I bought the ticket before that was all known. I also bought the ticket thinking I was going to see Tex playing first base. Since then, the Braves traded Tex. Is that fair to me - the fan? I also thought I might see Smoltz, Hudson, or Glavine. I can live with not seeing them, they are all on the disabled list. That's no ones fault. However, I am disappointed not to see Tex -- do you see my point in this.

It would be a totally different game if you couldn't "buy" an upgrade for your team over half way through the season. Let them play with who they start with......

Bubbleshare

Here's a new tool I've recently looked at.

Bubbleshare - http://www.bubbleshare.com/(Click the orange Play arrow to view. This is the most basic of Bubbleshare options. They have lots of themes and sliding shows. The text is actually speech balloons. Bubbleshare is extremely easy to use. You have to register to use Bubbleshare. Add to My Blog to access the various slideshow formats. ALSO -- It's a good idea to leave lots of white space in your speech/text boxes (if you use them). Sometimes words get mysteriously cut off.

Eclipse Crossword/ Puzzlemaker

Crosswords are easy with Eclipse - http://www.eclipsecrossword.com/

I've used this tool to create crosswords from my vocabulary. The best feature may be that you can save them and post them online. This one is linked from my wiki page - http://wesleyantech.wikispaces.com/space/showimage/Office-Ch1-Vocab.html
My students can do this online. No more printing sheets to hand out.

I've used Puzzlemaker and that one is good too. http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/
Puzzlemaker is better if you want to do different kinds of puzzles but you can't link them online in a wiki.

Voice Thread

Voice Thread is a cool new tool that I have begun using. You can upload pictures and make a slide show. You can add audio files. There are tools that you can annotate on the picture while you are talking about it. These files are then on the internet and you can share them with others. Other people can leave comments on specific parts of your show.

Check it out at http://voicethread.com/

Del.icio.us

http://del.icio.us/ has to be the best thing I have implented this year. This is an web page that is built for you to save your bookmarks (Favorites). Then, no matter where you are, you have your bookmarks with you. You can "tag" your favorite pages so that they are organized. I started using this at the beginning of the year. If I were to start over, I would think through my tagging system a little better but I love this idea. You set up an account and then when you go to the web site and log in, there they are. Here's what mine look like: http://del.icio.us/chorner . You can even search for other web sites by seeing who saved the same site you did. Then go to their delicious page and see what else they saved. Try it out!

FETC

I'm off to the Florida Educational Technology Conference (FETC) for the rest of the week. I am looking forward to some great educational time as well as some "down" time. FETC Is one of the largest conferences in the US devoted to educational technology. There will be about 9,000 educators there. The program is designed so that educators will have the opportunity to learn how to integrate technologies across the curriculum (K-12). There will be about 500 vendors displaying the latest hardware, software and successful strategies on student technology use. There are five of us from my school attending.

I probably won't have time to post again until next week.

See you later ......

Snow in Georgia

We had a beautiful blast of wintery weather this weekend. It snowed hard here for about five hours on Saturday - very unusual for the Atlanta area. The ground and air were warm so only about an inch of it actually stuck on the ground. The neighborhood kids had a lot of fun playing in it though. Now it is very cold. Anything that was wet yesterday is ice today. We should "thaw" out tomorrow sometime.

Braves get a center fielder

What do you think about the new center fielder coming to the Braves? Former Oakland A's player Mark Kotsay will join the Braves this season. The Braves had to give up pitcher Joey Devine.

I think it looks like a good trade. I wasn't a fan of Joey Devine anyway. Joey was given multiple opportunities to make it with the Braves and he continued to disappoint fans. He leaves the Braves with 6.86 ERA.

Kotsay comes to the Braves after having had back surgery. He'll have to pass a physical and we just need to pray that he truely is healthy. He has the potential to hit about .280 compared to the .220 that Andrew Jones put up last year. He's not the center fielder Andrew is but defensively he should be more than adequate.

I'm excited about this aquisition and the prosepct of a great season.

What do you think?

Good News/Bad News in My World of Sports

Being a female and a big Braves fan, I was extremely excited to hear that Javy Lopez was coming back to the Braves. He works hard. He's a good person. And he looks good in that uniform! All the reports say that he is in great shape after taking last year off and working out with a personal trainer. I'm rooting for him. He lives here in Atlanta and he's a family man who wants to be near his kids. He's been working with a catching coach for the last 2 months and he seems determined to make a comeback. What a great year this could be with Tom Glavine and Javy Lopez both returning. (Of course Javy still has to make the team in Spring Training.)

Enough on the Braves. Now for the bad news. My Steelers went down hard in that game Saturday night to the Jags. I thought we had a chance when we went up by 3 but the Jags made a good comeback. Somewhere we need to get some players who can take care of the football - 3 interceptions and a fumble - that's a little too much to swallow. Of course in Ben's defense, he had no running game and had to completely carry the offense himself. That's a lot to expect in a playoff game. The worst play of the night wasn't an interception or a fumble but was running a quarterback draw on 3rd-and-6 with Pittsburgh leading by one with just over three minutes to go -- that was the worst of the bunch.

If you think I've been a little hard on Ben then try on these statistics:

Ben was sacked a total of 46 times during the regular season, which is a dismal statistic in itself. However, in spite of that, he still managed to throw 32 touchdown passes, a team record, and he ended the season with a passer rating of 104.1. That rating was second in the league only to Tom Brady of the New England Patriots. With a quarterback like Ben Roethlisberger on your roster, there is hope for next year. Let's just pray that we can find some pass protection in the offseason.
